With Covid-19 spreading across the world and new measures being put in place to control the virus, many people are understandably concerned about their furry friends in this time of crisis. Any pet owner will have many questions about how to best care for their pets during this time and concerns about their welfare.

Here we try to answer just a few of those questions, to make this time a little easier for those of us lucky enough to have a pet as part of our family.

Can my pets get COVID-19?

Q: Can my pets get COVID-19?

A: Although there is some evidence that dogs can test a weak positive for Covid-19, they haven’t been known to experience symptoms of the illness or transmit it to people or to other pets.

In Hong Kong two dogs have tested positive to having the virus, but neither of them showed signs of being unwell, however it is important to still wash your hands regularly after touching pets. There have been no reports that cats can get Covid-19. As the situation is still changing though, if you have the virus it is advised to avoid contact with pets. For the moment Covid-19 seems to only be a human pandemic, it’s likely your furry friends will be safe.

Q: If my pet needs to go to a vet, what do I do?

A: Although vets are not open for check-ups and appointments, many are still conducting emergency procedures. If you are unlucky enough to have a pet that has a medical emergency during this time, call your local vet clinic as policies may differ between clinics, but it is likely that they will be able to help.

Q: Where can I buy pet food?

A: With panic buying in full swing, it can be difficult to know where to buy the things we need, both for ourselves and for our pets.

Ensuring your pet has a good level of nutrition is as important as ever to maintain their overall health. Luckily, many stores are still stocking pet food products, as are many online retailers, so for now, getting food for your pets shouldn’t be too much of an issue.

If you are in an at-risk group, ordering pet food to be delivered is a good option to protect yourself from the virus.

Q: Should I keep my cat inside during COVID-19?

A: Many cats do enjoy outdoor time under normal circumstances, however if you are in an at-risk group, it is advised at the moment, to keep your cat indoors.

Although cats are not reported to be able to catch the virus, they can pick it up on their fur or feet and carry it into your home. Keeping your cat indoors greatly limits the risk of your cat picking up the virus and exposing you to it.

It is important to make sure pet gets enough exercise though, so playing with them regularly and providing stimulating activities such as things they can climb on will help to keep your feline friends happy and protect yourself at the same time. It is recommended not to pet other cats, such as strays, to protect yourself from the disease and if your cat has been outdoors to maintain a high level of hygiene, not allow the cat on your furniture and to wash your hands regularly.

Q: How can I keep my pet entertained during lockdown?

A: Pets can be a great comfort during stressful times, like the ones we are experiencing now, but just as we can get bored inside all day so can they. Luckily, there are lots of fun ways to keep both you and your pet entertained. The time indoors can be a great opportunity to train your pet or teach it a new trick, this will not only keep you entertained but create a bonding activity for you and your furry friend. Playing games with cats is a great way for both you and your pet to have some fun, if you can’t buy a specialised cat toy, try making one out of some string and a soft object such as a sock.

Our pets are more than just animals, they are a part of our family. Enjoy the extra time at home to spend with your pets, even if it is under trying circumstances. Our pets are a source of companionship and love and they will help us to get through this and back to enjoying our regular lives in no time.
